In Nigeria, the Fulbright academic exchange program is NOT for students (graduate or undergraduate) or professionals. It is ONLY for lecturers or teaching faculty at specified Nigerian universities/research institutes, who have been teaching for a minimum period of three years. The program is for research purposes ONLY, for a maximum period of one academic session or ten months. The Fulbright program in Nigeria does not fund the acquisition of any degree in an American institution. Ford Foundation International Fellowships Programme

Region: Global, Africa, Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Latin America, Middle East, South Asia, South East and East Asia
Deadline Date: Varies from one country to another
The International Fellowships Programme (IFP) provides opportunities for advanced study to individuals who will use this education to become leaders in their respective fields, furthering development in their own countries and greater economic and social justice worldwide. The fellowship provides support for up to three years of formal graduate-level study leading to a masters or doctoral degree. To ensure that fellows are drawn from more diverse backgrounds than ever before, IFP will actively recruit candidates from social groups and communities that lack systematic access to higher education. Opportunities for advanced study are offered for residents from selected countries in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, and Russia. U.S. nationals are not eligible, although fellows may study in the United States.
Fellows may choose to study in a discipline related to one of the Ford Foundation's grant-making areas:
1. Asset building and community development:
Work-Force Development, Development Finance and Economic Security, Environment and Development, Community Development
2. Knowledge, creativity, and freedom:
Education and Scholarship, Religion, Society and Culture, Media, Arts and Culture, Sexuality and reproductive health

3. Peace and social justice
Human Rights, Governance, Civil Society

IFP support also supports short-term language study and training in research and computer skills prior to graduate school enrollment. In addition, fellows attend orientation sessions and then participate in information exchange networks among IFP fellows worldwide.
Applicants must:
 Demonstrate superior achievement in their undergraduate studies and hold a baccalaureate degree or its equivalent.
 Have substantial experience in community service or development-related activities.
 Possess leadership potential evidenced by their employment and academic experience.
 Propose to pursue a post-baccalaureate degree that will directly enhance their leadership capacity in a practical, policy, academic, or artistic discipline or field corresponding to one or more of the Foundation's areas as listed above.
 Present a plan specifying how they will apply their studies to social problems or issues in their own countries. Commit themselves to working on these issues following the fellowship period.

Japan/InterAmerican Development Bank Scholarship Program

Grant-awarding organization: funding from the Government of Japan.
Study areas: development-related fields (Social Sciences, Business, Public Administration or other development-related technical disciplines).
Level: Master.
Grant duration: 2 years.
Eligibility:
• Be a citizen of one of the borrowing member countries of the Bank.
• Be under the age of 35, and in exceptional cases, under 45.
• Hold a bachelor's degree or its equivalent in the social sciences, business or public administration, or another development-related technical discipline.
• Have obtained his/her university degree with superior grades.
• Have at least two years of work experience in a public agency or in an organization devoted to research or teaching.
• Be currently admitted, but have not yet begun studies, in a Master's degree program in the social sciences, business or public administration, or another development-related technical discipline.
• Be prepared to return to his/her native country upon completion of studies and work for at least two years in order to apply enhanced knowledge and skills toward helping accelerate economic and social development.
• Not be an Executive Director, their alternate, staff, long-term Consultant of the IADB, a blood relative up to the fourth degree, or a relative by marriage up to the second degree.
Grant amount: the scholarship provides benefits covering full tuition, university medical and accident insurance, an installation allowance, a monthly subsistence allowance, a book allowance, and economy class travel.

Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program

Students: students from a World Bank member country eligible to borrow and not from industrialized countries.
Grant-awarding organization: World Bank.
Study areas: for graduate studies in subjects related to economic development.
Level: Master’s degree or its equivalent.
Grant duration: 2 years maximum.
Eligibility (main criteria):
• Submit evidence of current unconditional admission (copy of formal admission letter) to at least one development-related university master's degree program and proof of application to another university located in any World Bank member country except the applicant's country. The application will not be processed without this requirement. Preference is given to applicants with more than one admission.
• Be a national of a World Bank member country eligible to borrow.
• Be between the ages of 25 and 45. Applicants born before March 31, 1961, will not be considered. For verification applicants should send a photocopy of their passport.
• Have at least 2, preferably 4 to 5, years of recent full-time professional work experience by March 31, 2006 after a university degree in the applicant's home country or in another developing country and usually in public sector.
• Hold a bachelor's degree or its equivalent in a development-related field; have a superior record in previous academic work. Applicant should also send a certified copy of the diploma and transcripts.
• Propose a program of study related to development at the master's level, in fields such as economics, public administration, finance, planning, health, population, agriculture, infrastructure, information systems and aquatic resources (provided that the focus of study is on public policy aspects of these fields), environment and natural resource management, education, and other development-related subjects.
Grant amount: the amount of scholarship may vary depending upon the host country and the tuition charged by the host university. In recent years the annual value of a scholarship has averaged around US 30,000.

British Chevening Scholarships (students from developing countries)

This scholarship is awarded to graduate students from developing countries.

Students: students from developing countries and non-EU students who want to study at least 3 months in UK.
Grant-awarding organization: Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO).
Study areas: most subjects.
Level: most scholars already have a first degree and the majority study for postgraduate degrees particularly Masters courses.
Grant duration: 3-12 months (during the studies in UK).
Eligibility: competition for Chevening scholarships is intense, and only one in every 25 applicants is successful. A typical successful applicant would be:
• A graduate with proven academic skills.
• Committed to return to their country and contribute to the socio-economic development of their country through implementing the new skills and knowledge acquired in the UK.
• Established in a career, with a track record of excellence and achievement, and the prospect of becoming a leader in his/her chosen field.
• The vast majority of Chevening scholars are aged 25 - 35 years old.
• Be able to show at interview that they possess the personal qualities to benefit from their scholarship and use it to succeed in their chosen career.
• Have a clear idea how their scholarship will benefit their country on their return.
• Have good English Language skills, as most UK Higher Education Institutions require a minimum IELTS of 6.5 for admission onto Postgraduate courses.
Grant amount: there are three types of scholarship:
• Type A scholarships: these cover tuition fees only.
• Type B scholarships: these are full scholarships that cover tuition fees, monthly stipend and various one-off allowances.
• Type C scholarships: these vary from award to award and cover part/full stipend and/or allowances.

Application deadline: there isn't a single timetable for applications and so it is important that you check with the local office when the deadline for applications in your country is.

Observations: the Chevening Scholarships scheme has ceased operating in the majority of European Union countries. Priority is for applicants from developing countries.

Erasmus Mundus

Students: non-European students who want to study in Europe.
Grant-awarding organization: European Commission.
Study areas: all.
Level: Master.
Grant duration: for the two academic years.
Eligibility:
• To be a citizen of a third-country (all countries other than the 25 EU Member States, the EEA-EFTA states (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) and the candidate countries for accession to the EU (presently Bulgaria, Croatia, Romania and Turkey).
• Not residing in any UE Member State or participating country.
• To have not carried out his/her main activity (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in any of the UE Member States or participating countries.
Grant amount: € 21,000 per academic year (€ 42,000 for the 2 years).
